[at the bottom of the stairs] on her way down, so he was left behind and had to walk down on his own! It was almost a good thing, because everyone started to laugh, and it really lightened the mood.” ~Dani
I’ve never photographed a wedding day without some sort of “opps” moment…but if you keep the right perspective, it can’t ruin your day!
It’s really not hard to see why Dani & Mike chose Blue Harbor Resort right?!
“We knew we wanted [a venue] close to where I grew up, but that would be more modern and accessible to our family members coming from out of the state than the venues in the small town that I’m from. From the moment we turned the corner driving to Blue Harbor Resort and saw its beautiful facade, we knew it was the one.” ~Dani
It’s always nice to have a few minutes with just the bride and groom for some photos. When the wedding party is done being photographed and goes in for cocktail hour, the newlyweds can finally have a moment alone together, which is scarce on a wedding day!
“One of my favorite details was my veil. I was initially dead set against wearing one, but a few months before the big day, I was watching (what else?) Say Yes to the Dress on TLC with my mom. The episode was focused on veils, and it guest starred the late Joan Rivers. She was giving one of the brides absolutely hell for choosing to forego the veil. ‘The only time in your life you get to wear a veil and you’re not going to wear one?’ Her harping got the best of the bride on the show, and it got the best of me too.” ~Dani
After their ceremony and a few photos, Dani traded in her cathedral length veil for a jeweled flower crown, which is a great compromise if you’re not sure you want to wear your veil all day long.
I love sharing when other wedding vendors have provided an amazing experience for the couples I work with. For Dani & Mike, the MVP was Kendall Waber, the coordinator at Blue Harbor Resort:
“She had to step in as our wedding coordinator at the last minute when the previous coordinator left. As anyone can imagine, having your venue’s wedding coordinator leave three months before your wedding was quite distressing, but Blue Harbor handled it well and Kendall made us feel so at ease. She was on top of things, giving 110% to make sure we were taken care of.” ~Dani
“Our baker (Cassondra Mallow of Jenn’s Java in Manitowoc, WI) truly outdid herself with the cake, using real strawberries and making every single part of it from scratch.” ~Dani
It’s making my mouth water remember it! Dani & Mike chose to have their brunch reception in one of the side rooms at The Blue Harbor Resort, forgoing the main ballroom. It provided a beautiful view of the lakefront, and tons of natural light (a photographers dream)!!
All of us were surprised when Dani & Mike took to the dace floor for their choreographed first dance! Dani says it was one of the highlights of their wedding day…
“One of the most memorable moments for both of us was the surprise on everyone’s face when we did our first dance. Neither of us is particularly known for dancing, but we practiced and worked out an easy but effective dance routine; and no one was expecting that!” ~Dani
It was so much fun to watch Dani & Mike dance with their family and friends! They set up their own playlist, and Dani has a good suggestion for other couples who are planning to do this:
“…make sure you put some songs you DON’T like on it. I filled our wedding playlist with all of my absolute favorite wedding-appropriate songs, so Mike had to practically drag me off the dance floor. Every time I’d think to myself, ‘I’ll take a break after this song,’ the next song would start playing and I’d think ‘But this is my song!’ Having some songs that are just okay will give you, and your guests, time to recoup before the next big hit starts.” ~Dani
Haha…that is true. I didn’t really see Dani off the dance floor much : )
It was such a pleasure working with Dani & Mike – from their engagement photos, to photographing their wedding day, and creating their beautiful wedding album & metal wall portrait to enjoy!
Some final advice for couples planning their own wedding? Dani says:
“Start early. No matter how focused or decisive you are, you will eventually come to a point in your wedding planning where you’ll go, “Shoot, I didn’t think of that,” and you may need to rethink a part of your wedding day, or make a last minute decision. You *will* make changes to your original plan, and that’s okay. Trust your instincts when it comes time to make the tough decisions, and you won’t regret them.”
Congratulations Dani & Mike! And thanks to the incredible team that helped make their day possible, including…
